How can essential oils be beneficial when dealing with anxiety and depression?
As a Massage Therapist and Self-Care Coach I run into many clients that are dealing with anxiety and depression. Massage is a great way to manage stress and anxiety however we also have several oils and practices that may help.
Anxiety and panic attacks can show up unexpected in many different ways. In this article I would like to share how using essential oils may help provide support when confronted with a thought or circumstance that triggers anxiety. They may also help alleviate the effects of anxiety all together. Many of us are silently dealing with chronic depression, racing thoughts, and other debilitating symptoms of anxiety. Here are some things to consider when it comes to essential oils.
Breathing in essential oils can directly effect your emotional state. When the essential oils are inhaled, molecules are trapped in the olfactory membranes. The olfactory nerve then sends impulses to the limbic region of the brain. The Limbic system is directly connected to the part of the brain that controls heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone levels. Essential oils can have a profound effect on the body and the mind.
The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked the the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional center. Anxiety, fear, depression, anger and joy all come from this region. That is why inhaling essential oils can be so beneficial to our emotional state. Diffusing essential oils in your home or office can is a great way to add essential oils like Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Bergamot, Lemon, Lime and many more.
